The 1989 Book Tag

Thursday, September 17, 2015

The 1989 book tag was a tag created by Charnell @ Reviews from a Bookworm. I saw it on Faith's Bookspiration and since I love Taylor Swift's newest album, I decided that I absolutely have to do this!

Welcome to New York

"You can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls..."

1. A book with LGBT themes:

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

I haven't personally read a whole lot of books with LGBT themes. The only other one I could think of that I've read that fits this prompt is The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I did not like that book. Lola was raised by two dads in this book, but I don't know, I guess that's as far as the LGBT theme goes.
Blank Space

"You can tell me when it's over, if the high was worth the pain..."

2. A book that hit you right in the feels... But it was totally worth it:

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

The ending of this book broke my little heart. Actually, if we're being totally real, the ending of all three of these books broke my little heart in different ways. But I love them so much!

***

"I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream..."

3. A book that you hated, but loved the cover:

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I love carnival books. The cover of this book is SO pretty and fancy and I just love it, but I thought this book was so dreadfully boring. This was the least epic battle of the magicians in the history of ever.

***

"I've got a blank space baby, and I'll write your name..."

4. Your latest book boyfriend/girlfriend:

Zodiac by Romina Russell

I loved Hysan from Zodiac. I don't know if I'd count him in my official list of book boyfriends, but this is the latest book I've read that I had a strong opinion on the love interests! And Hysan was pretty much awesome. Boo Matthias, yay Hysan.
Style

"We never go out of style..."

5. A timeless classic you love:

Harry Potter by JK Rowling

Harry Potter will never go out of style.
Out of the Woods

"The rest of the world was black and white, but we were in screaming color..."

6. A book which had vivid world building:

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

I thought this book had excellent world building. I had no trouble whatsoever imagining what anything in this book could look like. It was fantastic, in my opinion!

***

"The monsters turned out to be just trees..."

7. A book where things weren't exactly how they seemed:

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

Things definitely were not the way I thought they were in this book. The twist in this book took me COMPLETELY by surprise!
All You Had To Do Was Stay

"You were all I wanted... But not like this..."

8. A book you were eagerly anticipating, but ended up being disappointed by:

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

When I first actually read this book, I think I was totally impressed by it because I had never read a book where the author was gutsy enough to do what Roth did in the end. I gave it 5 stars on goodreads probably solely for the purpose of how much it made me feel and how hard I ugly cried, but man, looking back? Disappointing. When I read this book, I thought Four was a total douchebag. I thought he was great as far as I remember for the first two books. And then the whole time I was reading this book, I felt like I was reading a whole different series. It felt like a completely different book to me than how the first two made me feel and I didn't like that. It was way too different and I didn't like where it went. So thinking back now, I'd definitely say this book was a giant disappointment.
Shake It Off

"The haters gonna hate..."

9. A book/series that everyone seems to love but you hate:

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

For the sake of not being totally predictable, I'm going to feature something for this question besides Shatter Me. I thought the first three books of this series were decent. Like, I don't think I loved them, but I liked them. But holy crap did I ever hate the last three. I DESPISED City of Heavenly Fire. I think that I could have just disliked it, but it made me SO ANGRY that we kept getting new characters that will be the focus of her next series shoved down our throats when I didn't even give two shits about the characters that had been in this story since the beginning. I'm done reading about the Shadowhunter adventures.

***

10. A book/series that everyone seems to hate but you love:

Delirium series by Lauren Oliver

This is literally the only series I can think of that I love and I don't know a whole lot of other people who like it.
I Wish You Would

"I wish you knew I'll never forget you as long as I live..."

11. A book/series you know you will always love:

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

I. Love. This. Series. Enough said.

***

"I wish you were right here, right now..."

12. An upcoming release you wish you could have right now:

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
&
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Bad Blood

"Now we've got bad blood, you know it used to be mad love..."

13. A character you once loved, but grew to hate:

Meadow Woodson from The Murder Complex series by Lindsay Cummings

I don't know how fond I was of Meadow in book one, but I'm pretty sure that I thought she was tolerable. I probably wouldn't say I loved her, but I did like her as far as I can remember. But I absolutely HATED her in book two. I think that if Meadow wasn't in the second book, I might have had a chance of liking it. She ruined the whole series for me.

***

"Did you have to do this, I was thinking that you could be trusted. Did you have to ruin what was shiny, now it's all rusted..."

14. An author you haven't forgiven for the things they did to your favorite characters/books:

I'm gonna go with Lauren Oliver on this one. I hated what she did to Alex in the last book. I can understand why he would feel the way he did, but man, I just wanted them to kiss and make up, but he was basically a douche for the whole book. Also, I HATE that the series was open ended. As much as I complain about that, I have to add that to the list of things I haven't forgiven.
Wildest Dreams

"I can see the end as it begins..."

15. A book that was far too predictable:

The Maze Runner by James Dashner

I liked this series, but after awhile I found it to be very predictable. Maybe not in the sense that I necessarily knew what was going to happen, but to the point that I was just sick of W.I.C.K.E.D because I felt that everything THEY did was predictable. Everything was about the variables of their experiment. Every. Single. Stinkin. Thing. Thomas could have sneezed and W.I.C.K.E.D would be like "THE VARIABLES!"

***

"Nothing lasts forever but this is getting good now..."

16. A book/series that you wish could have gone on forever:

Once again, I am choosing Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I think that this series could go on forever and I would love every minute of it as long as Alex and Lena are happily in love. I mean, it took 3 books for the resistance to take out ONE city in the whole country, there is SO much more that could be touched on, this book series could go on and on and on!!
How You Get The Girl

"That's how it works, that's how you get the girl..."

17. One of your favorite books where they 'got the girl':

Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken

I don't know man, the wizard eventually gets the girl in this book.
This Love

"In darkest screams, in wildest dreams, I never dreamed of this..."

18. A book that completely shocked you:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

The end of this book shocked me pretty good.
I Know Places

"Love's a fragile little flame, it could burn out..."

19. A book you thought you loved, but quickly came to hate:

Amelia Anne is Dead and Gone by Kat Rosenfield

I was excited to read this book. I thought it seemed interesting. I don't remember how I felt when I first started reading it, but by the time I was done I was glad it was finally over. I hated all the overly flowery, unnecessary detail. I hated the town mentioned in this book and everyone in it. They don't seem to do anything except call each other about the dead girl and frickin' please, I'm from a small town like this one and it's surrounded by more small towns and NO ONE is like that. They have lives unlike the people in this book. This book frustrated me to NO END!

***

"Something happens when everybody finds out, see the vultures circling dark clouds..."

20. A book you didn't want to be seen reading:

I was completely misled about this book. When I decided I would buy it, I had been talking to a girl I worked with at the time and she was telling me about this book series that is really gory and is getting on the banned book list or something like that. Well, when I heard gory I was totally thinking blood and guts so imagine my surprise when I went out and ordered all three of these books and it turned out it was just a bunch of nasty sex and a terrible storyline. And like, maybe it could have been an okay series, but man, I didn't even think the sex scenes were well written at all. As far as I remember they were just short scenes too. If you're gonna write a book that's all about sex, at least make it good and detailed!
Clean

"The drought was the very worst, when the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst..."

21. When the wait between the books made you forget everything that happened:

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Okay, I just read these books this year. Like in fact, I just finished Heir of Fire, like what? Two months before Queen of Shadows came out? And when I read Queen of Shadows I had already forgotten SO MUCH about the series. It kinda came back, but not as much as I would have thought!

***

"By morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally free..."

22. A book series you wiped from your memory:

Seriously, this is probably one of the worst series I ever read. The only reason I read all three of them is because I bought them all at once. Because you never know, it could have been an okay book and I would have been dying to read the rest of them. But mostly I was like, ahh man there's more left to read and I have them all and I'm too lazy to take them back to the post office to send back. At one point, in the middle of book two I think, I had to put it down because I was getting so irrationally angry that the author kept using the word murmur over and over and over and I wanted to die.

So there's my 1989 book tag! If you see this and feel the urge to do it, just know that it is rather time consuming. Also know that I would love to see it, so let me know if you do it! :)

  1. Awesome answers, Cyra!!! I did the Taylor Swift book tag a few months back, but not the 1989 one, so I may do it in the near future :) I haven't read some of the books you chose, but I totally agree with you on Throne of Glass for Clean. I obviously didn't forget the whole world and everything in the span of a week, but I had to set down Crown of Midnight for a week (and just picked it back up yesterday or the day before) and kind of completely blanked on what the heck happened in the first fifty pages... So anyway, awesome post and answers! :D

    1. I was surprised by how much I forgot about what happened in the series in the span of two months! Maybe it's the fact that I read so many books between Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows, but I don't know! I loooove that series so I'll probably have to reread it when the fifth one comes out! Can't wait to see if you do this tag! I might have to find this regular Taylor Swift tag and do that one too! These tags are SO FUN!
