Untitled Series #1
Publisher: HarperCollins
Publication Date: April 28, 2015
Rating: 3 Stars

Pages: 320

Summary (from Goodreads):

Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.

Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live.

So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn't think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—and as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. And in Aza’s hands lies the fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

This book starts off with the main character, Aza Ray Boyle, introducing herself by telling us all about her history with hospitals. She has spent a lot of time in them in her almost sixteen years. Because she has an incredibly rare disease that completely baffles her doctors. She is the only person know to have this disease so it's named after her. I felt like the whole first chapter was just her going on and on and on about her disease and imminent death. I nearly stopped reading this book because I was like okay, yeah, I get it. You have crappy lungs and are probably going to die.

So anyway, things are going as well as can be expected for Aza until she sees a ship sailing across the sky and calling out to her. Everyone but her best friend Jason believes it's just a hallucination. But after some internet research they come up with Magonia. Basically a world up in the sky. They don't get much further than that before Aza leaves that world behind and wakes up in Magonia. The people there are blue and bird-like. They sing things into happening and they are on a mission that requires Aza's help. She has to decide if she can trust these people.

I liked the dual point of view with Jason. I liked how he truly believed Aza was still out there and never gave up looking for her. He does everything in his power to find her and get her back. He's kind of a weird dude, but Aza's kind of weird too. So they make a good pair.

I also liked how when Aza got to Magonia, it wasn't like she somehow automatically became an expert on all things Magonia. She asks a lot of questions. She really wants to go home. I liked how it wasn't like okay, I'm here, I'm just gonna like it and pretend I know everything.

I liked the idea of this story. I think that Magonia being a land in the sky is a really interesting setting. I think all the singing and the little birds that live in your chest and sing with you are weird. But in general I think this is a really neat concept.

I did not care for how this book was written. Honestly, I may not have tried hard enough to like it. I didn't like all the weird parentheses and brackets and such because I didn't know what I was supposed to fill into most of the blanks. I didn't really care for how it was written in general either. I feel like things are worded too weird and I had to read some things over a few times to fully understand what they were trying to say.

So I am giving this book three stars because I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it either. I might read the second one, but I wouldn't go out of my way to read it or anything.

What did you think of this one if you've read it?

The Murder Complex #2
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Publication Date: May 26, 2015
Rating: 2 Stars
Source: Purchase

Summary (from the back of the book): “My little sister Peri, stolen. My brother Koi and my father, gone.

Suddenly the truth comes back to me. I remember exactly where I am. What I am.

I am a prisoner of the Initiative, with a connection to the Murder Complex in my brain. I came here to destroy the Motherboard, shut the system down for good.

I am the only one who can end The Murder Complex. If I die, the system dies along with me.

That is the only way.”

This book picks up like three weeks after the end of the first book. Zephyr is out searching for Lark, Meadow's mother, so he can kill her and destroy the Initiative. Meadow is locked up by the Initiative being tortured for information on her mother and the resistance. After the resistance finds a successful way to get Meadow to cooperate with them, they release her to lure her mother out of hiding. She manages to accomplish that and then Zephyr comes along and kills Lark. Then all the Patients attack the Initiative and in the chaos Zephyr, Sketch, and Meadow all escape the Shallows. Now they're setting off on Meadow's mission to find and rescue her family.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I liked the first one. But I can't remember why. I can't remember really anything about the first one. I feel like I could have liked this one better if I could remember anything. But I just couldn't get into this book. It felt like a chore to finish this book. I kept hoping it would get better.

I did not like Meadow. I found her to be incredibly unlikable throughout the whole book. She doesn't care about anyone around her or the fact that they were sacrificing everything to help her find her family. She doesn't act grateful at all. There was not one single point in this book where I can remember feeling anything for her at all. Or even thinking anything nice.

Zephyr, I just felt bad for him. He follows Meadow around like a lost puppy, waiting for her to give him a second glance. And he acts like he’s only there because he has to be, not because he wants to help the girl he supposedly loves to find her missing family.

Sketch, I just found her to be annoying. And her and Zephyr’s constant childish arguments.

Something I noticed about both of these books is things are always described the same way. In the first book, there are seemingly constant mentions of how silver Meadow’s hair is. And in this one, every single time Zephyr and Sketch started arguing, it was said that they were arguing like children.

Something that I liked about this book would be that the chapters were short so it was always easy to find a stopping spot when I had to put the book down for any reason.

I mostly gave this book two stars because of how badly I wanted to like it. I would probably not ever re-read this book. However, I did like the first one quite a bit and I liked the first book that’s out in the author’s other series. This book just was not for me.

Snow Like Ashes #2
Publisher: Balzer and Bray
Publication Date: October 13, 2015
Rating: 4 Stars
Source: ARC acquired as a gift

Summary (from the back of the book): “It’s been three months since Winter was freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth Primoria’s powerful — and possibly dangerous — lost chasm of magic. The last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay — so when the king of Cordell orders Meira and Theron on a trip across Primoria to learn the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to get support to keep the chasm shut. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Jannuari — leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception is woven tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom — and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter but for the world.”

I thought that this was a really good sequel. It was a little bit slow, but not in a bad way. Meira is forced to reopen Winter's mines to repay Cordell for their part in freeing Winter, and also to search for the lost chasm of magic which is quickly found. King Noam then forces Meira and Theron to go search for a way to open it. Theron wants to use the trip as a way to create peace between all the kingdoms and Meira wants to gain allies for Winter.

This book is told in two points of view, Meira and Mather. I was firmly team Theron in Snow Like Ashes, but I think I've switched teams after hearing Mather's point of view. He's not such a bad dude.

I like Meira. She is trying really hard to do what she feels is best for Winter. She's trying to hold herself to the highest standards of queens that she can (if that makes any sense? I couldn't think of a better way to word that). She doesn't think that she can be both Queen Meira and Meira the orphaned soldier girl. She's struggling to find a balance between who she was and who she needs to be.

I quite liked Mather in this book as well. He seems to be struggling to find his new place in Winter now that he is no longer the king. Also, he seems to struggle to accept his parents and his feelings of betrayal after they made him believe he was the orphaned king of Winter for his whole life. He tries to help in little ways that no one really notices. When Theron and Meira leave on their journey, he stays behind and kind of does his own thing to help Winter against the orders of Cordell.

Now for Theron... I don't know. You can't really help but kinda like him because he seems like he's probably just totally adorable and he's so optimistic, but for most of this book I really just wanted to punch him in the throat. He kind of acts like he thinks his cause is more important than Meira's. He kind of uses Meira's search for allies to help his cause without consulting with her and it kind of undermines what she's trying to do for Winter and what he's doing doesn't really leave the impression that she would like with the kingdoms they are visiting... If that makes any sense either... He's just basically a pain in the butt.

I also thought that it was really interesting that you get to see so much of some of the other kingdoms. I feel like this is where the book felt the slowest. You get to meet Summer, Yakim, and Ventralli and learn about their conduits, rulers, ways, and other people of interest within the kingdoms. So after going through that three times, it did get kind of slow, but no less interesting.

The ending isn't really a cliffhanger, but it leaves you NEEDING to know what happens next! I certainly was not expecting the betrayal and twist at the end!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would definitely recommend it. And I plan on purchasing this book when it comes out in October (I have had it pre-ordered FOREVER)!

New Book Blogger!

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Alright! I have been thinking about doing this for awhile now! So I'm pretty excited to have finally started my book blog! Bare with me (anyone unfortunate enough to stumble across this) while I figure out what I'm doing! I have some ideas for blog posts and I've begun making up some reviews to post later! I probably won't be able to post a whole terrible lot for the next week-ish or so because I don't actually have Internet at my house yet and I'm almost out of data on my phone! I think I'm probably gonna need to come up with a different name for this blog, but I don't know what yet so if anyone has any brilliant ideas for me, I'd love to hear them. I'm not feeling very creative today!

:)
