Waiting on Wednesday: September Releases!

Wednesday, August 31, 2016

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I decided that I'm going to change up Waiting on Wednesday. Instead of doing one every week, I'm just going to do one once a month and feature all the books coming out the next month that I'm salivating for.

Here are the books that I'm waiting for in September!

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess
Kingdom on Fire #1

I am Henrietta Howel. The first female sorcerer. The prophesied one. Or am I?

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames. When she's brought to London to train with Her Majesty's sorcerers, she meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, young men eager to test her powers and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her. As Henrietta discovers the secrets hiding behind the glamour of sorcerer life, she begins to doubt that she's the true prophesied one. With battle looming, how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves?

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
Untitled #1

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it. When her older sister, Anna, was murdered three years ago and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best. The language of violence.

While her crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people, even in her small hometown. She relegates herself to the shadows, a girl who goes unseen in plain sight, unremarkable in the high school hallways.

But Jack Fisher sees her. He’s the guy all other guys want to be: the star athlete gunning for valedictorian with the prom queen on his arm. Guilt over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered hasn’t let him forget Alex over the years, and now her green eyes amid a constellation of freckles have his attention. He doesn’t want to only see Alex Craft; he wants to know her.

So does Peekay, the preacher’s kid, a girl whose identity is entangled with her dad’s job, though that does not stop her from knowing the taste of beer or missing the touch of her ex-boyfriend. When Peekay and Alex start working together at the animal shelter, a friendship forms and Alex’s protective nature extends to more than just the dogs and cats they care for.

Circumstances bring Alex, Jack, and Peekay together as their senior year unfolds. While partying one night, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting the teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
Stealing Snow #1

Seventeen-year-old Snow has spent the majority of her life within the walls of the Whittaker Institute, a high security mental hospital in upstate New York. Deep down, she knows she's not crazy and doesn't belong there. When she meets a mysterious, handsome new orderly and dreams about a strange twisted tree she realizes she must escape and figure out who she really is.

Using her trusting friend Bale as a distraction, Snow breaks free and races into the nearby woods. Suddenly, everything isn't what it seems, the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur, and she finds herself in icy Algid--her true home--with witches, thieves, and a strangely alluring boy named Kai, none of whom she's sure she can trust. As secret after secret is revealed, Snow discovers that she is on the run from a royal lineage she's destined to inherit, a father more powerful and ruthless than she could have imagined, and choices of the heart that could change the fate of everything...including Snow's return to the world she once knew.

This breathtaking first volume begins the story of how Snow becomes a villain, a queen, and ultimately a hero.

As Angra unleashes the Decay on the world, Meira, Mather, and Ceridwen must bring the kingdoms of Primoria together…or lose everything.

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass #5

Aelin's journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
Untitled #1

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.

September is going to be HARD on my wallet. I'm probably going to end up buying all of these at some point. Although, I can probably wait on Frost Like Night, Stealing Snow, and A Shadow Bright and Burning because I've read all of them already. I'm pretty sure I know which book is going to be featured in September's Owlcrate and the theme is Darkness and it just sounds awesome so I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up buying that too. Goodbye money. I barely knew you.

This is also only all the books that I know for SURE I'm going to end up with somehow, some way. A few other ones coming out sounds pretty cool too, but these are the ones I NEED.

What books are you looking forward to in September?

Snow Like Ashes #3
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Publication Date: September 20th, 2016
Rating: 4 Stars
Source: Gifted ARC
Pages: 496

Summary (from Goodreads):

Angra is alive, his Decay is spreading—and no one is safe.

Meira will do anything to save her world. With Angra trying to break through her mental defenses, she desperately needs to learn to control her own magic—so when the leader of a mysterious Order from Paisly offers to teach her, she jumps at the chance. But the true solution to stopping the Decay lies in a labyrinth deep beneath the Season Kingdoms. To defeat Angra, Meira will have to enter the labyrinth, destroy the very magic she’s learning to control—and make the biggest sacrifice of all.

Mather will do anything to save his queen. He needs to rally the Children of the Thaw, find Meira—and finally tell her how he really feels. But with a plan of attack that leaves no kingdom unscathed and a major betrayal within their ranks, winning the war—and protecting Meira—slips farther and farther out of reach.

Ceridwen will do anything to save her people. Angra had her brother killed, stole her kingdom, and made her a prisoner. But when she’s freed by an unexpected ally who reveals a shocking truth behind Summer’s slave trade, Ceridwen must take action to save her true love and her kingdom, even if it costs her what little she has left.

As Angra unleashes the Decay on the world, Meira, Mather, and Ceridwen must bring the kingdoms of Primoria together…or lose everything.

Frost Like Night picks up right were Ice Like Fire left off. Meira and her gang are in the Ventrallan dungeons. She needs to head to Paisley with Rares to learn to control her magic and Mather and his Children of the Thaw are charged with saving the Ventrallan king from his wife who is now working with Angra and is infused with the Decay.

Meira has to learn to control her magic before she will be able to face off with Angra and to destroy all magic in Primoria. She will face a lot of hardships between the beginning of this book and the end where she will have to make a pretty big sacrifice for the greater good. But she does it with grace while leading her people to a brighter future.

This book has betrayal, sacrifice, romance, heartbreak, death, and a little bit of everything in between. This series had a bit of a love triangle in the beginning, but it's definitely not anymore. The romance is sweet and the relationship between Meira and the other guy is nice. I liked the way this was resolved and even though I would have been happy either way, I think that this way was probably for the best.

This book is told from three points of view Meira in the first person and then Mather and Ceridwen in the third person. If I had to choose anything to complain about in this book, it would be the fact that Meira's training in Paisley felt too conveniently fast. She seemed to struggle with her magic quite a bit before, but she gets everything down so fast, it almost felt pointless to even have her go to Paisley to train.

Also, I thought that we were supposed to get a deeper look into Autumn and Paisley in this book. You DO get a bit of a look into things in Autumn. You see how Autumn weddings and funerals are done, but that's about it. And you really don't learn much of anything about Paisley except some stuff about their magic.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I quite liked this series and this was a satisfying ending. I wish I would have reread the first two before reading this one to have a clearer picture in my head of what was going on, but I think I'll binge read all three when I get a hardcover of this one. I don't think my review really does this book justice, but sometimes I find series finales really hard to review without just spouting all of the events of the book out at you so I hope you get from this that I really enjoyed it!

Have you read Snow Like Ashes or Ice Like Fire? Are you looking forward to this book? What did you think of the first two?

Discussion: How to Stay Productive

Thursday, August 25, 2016

It has been awhile since I came out with a new discussion post, but today I have a good one for you! I was asked to share some thing that hinder my productivity in my home office and what I do to combat these things!

First of all, I don't really have much for a home office yet. I blog from my couch in front of the television. I have a specific vision for what I want my home office to look like when I make one someday. For now, I am on the hunt for a desk that fits my criteria. It is not going well.

Anyway, here are four things that can hinder my productivity and how I deal with it!

Productivity Hinderance #1: The TV

Honestly, this one can be REALLY bad, but I don't find it to be too much of a problem for myself. I have antenna tv. All I can pick up is five channels. Three of them are PBS, one is FOX, and the other is NBC. There aren't very many shows I find myself wanting to watch on these channels. Except on Wednesdays.

To combat the TV from hindering my productivity, I usually have it muted. I mostly just like it to have it on for the company. And on Wednesdays I just let myself not be productive. September 21st is when all my shows come back on!

Productivity hinderance #2: Social Media

Since most of the work I do is on the computer, it's VERY easy to get distracted by social media. Even if it's not on the computer, it's beyond easy to just pull it up on my phone and get lost in my Twitter feed or on Instagram. My new thing I like to do constantly is refresh the Instagram stories to see what the people I follow are up to. Also, I spend a lot of time procrastinating by filling online shopping carts with things I can't have.

To combat the social media/internet distraction, I try to do housework instead. If I find myself struggling with what I want to say in a post and don't feel like reading a book for more blog material, instead of turning to social media, I try to go accomplish something productive in my house. There's always dishes that need doing or laundry that needs to be put away. I recently learned there is a surround wifi enhancer that also allows you to turn off access to certain sites, like social media. This way you won't even be tempted to look until your work is done and you can turn it back on!

At least then I'm being productive somehow.

Productivity Hinderance #3: The Boyfriend

I love the boy, I really do. But he never wants to talk to me when I don't have a post inspiration. And when I do, he talks so much that I can't focus on what I'm doing. I try to make it work so that when he's not busy working I can do whatever with him. But when I do that, he just wants to play his farming game.

And I swear the only time he ever REALLY wants to play a game or watch a movie with me is when I have other things that need to be done. For instance, I just participated in an ARC Tour. I had ten days to read the book. I told him this several times, but he was just dead set on actually hanging out with me.

Combatting this productivity hinderance can be hard because it's not always easy to make him go away. Usually if I offer myself up for one round of Mario Kart or something, he will leave me alone to finish up what needs to be done.

Productivity Hinderance #4: The Cat

Look at that naughty face.

When my cat is inside the house, he is a huge hinderance to my productivity. I'm always having to chase him down because I can hear him scratching the walls somewhere in my house or he's doing something else naughty and I have to go find the squirt bottle and find him. Or he's feeling feisty and won't stop biting me. Or there's the very rare occasions where he's feeling actually affectionate and he comes and sits on my lap and makes it hard to blog.

To combat this, I generally open the door and tell him to get out of my house. It gets old having to get up over and over and over to go find him and stop him from doing naughty things.

I don't combat anything when he's feeling affectionate. I accept the kitty snuggles because they don't happen as often as I'd like.

What are some things that hinder your productivity? Do we have any that are the same? What do you do to stop the hinderances?

Book Nerd Bites (#2)

Monday, August 22, 2016

Book Nerd Bites is an original monthly feature created by Becca, Cyra, Kristie, Natasha, and Valerie as part of the Book Blogger Creativity Project hosted by Nori. Each month we will be sharing exciting recipes inspired by some of our favorite books. Feel free to join in, but please make sure you link your post back to us so we can enjoy your favorite bookish delights as well!

Don't forgot to use if you want to share your food inspiration with us on twitter or instagram!

For our second round of posts for this super fun project, our group decided to choose our recipes based on a theme! The theme is...

HARRY POTTER!!

What better theme is there after the recent release of Cursed Child? There probably isn't one, let's be real.

Anyway, if you've read Harry Potter, you know that it's plum full of magically delicious sounding sweets and dishes! As much as I want to make ALL of the recipes, I chose to make chocolate frogs!

For some reason, when I was thinking about how I would do this, I imagined it to be a lot more difficult than it actually was. As long as you are sufficient in using the microwave and the freezer, you will excel with this recipe.

I mentioned in my last post that I am not at all a chef and will never don their signature headwear, but just because this story will reinforce that idea for you and I can relate it to this recipe somehow, I will share this with you:

When I was in probably middle school, MAYBE like the ninth grade at the latest, I was trying to make puppy chow. I was attempting to melt the chocolate and peanut butter together, but somehow managed to burn it beyond all recognition. In the microwave. Like, it tasted like ashes. I ruined the bowl. I threw it away so my dad wouldn't yell at me about it. It was BAAAAAD.

But thankfully, I didn't relive the experience with this recipe!

Enough chitchat, these are the supplies, ingredients, and steps that I used to create these delightful chocolate creatures!

Supplies & Ingredients:

-Chocolate Chips
(I used milk chocolate)

-Optional Fillings
(I used marshmallow creme)

Instructions:

Empty your chocolate chips into a bowl. Microwave at thirty second intervals until melted.

When my chocolate was almost melted, I added a big spoonful of coconut oil to it. I did this because I vaguely might recall hearing somewhere that if you're doing something like this, adding oil will make the finished product more shiny? I don't know, I might have made that up.

If you're going to use a filling, add a little bit of the melted chocolate to each spot in the mold. I tapped it on the counter a few times to make sure that it filled in all the crevices in the mold.

Put these in the freezer for about five minutes so they harden a little bit so it will be easier to put the filling layer on.

Add your filling.

I just bought a jar of marshmallow creme. I aggressively sprayed my hand down with cooking spray so that I could more easily dollop the creme onto the chocolate.

It was a mess, but it was a more acceptable mess than being covered in sticky marshmallow creme.

Fill up the rest of your mold with the chocolate.

Put the tray in the freezer until the chocolate is firm and set.

Here is my finished product!

And a more poorly photographed close up of a frog. Doesn't it just look like it could leap off the plate? No? Okay.

I personally do not have a printer and I am far too lazy to go and find one, so I didn't make a chocolate frog package or any wizard trading cards. But I did have every intention of doing that.

If you have easy access to a printer, I found templates for the necessary parts here. The link goes to a template for the trading cards, but there is a link on that page to their container template!

What do you think of my chocolate frogs? Pretty sweet, huh? Which Harry Potter treat would you like to be able to try? Check out the rest of my group this week to find recipes for other Harry Potter inspired goodies!

Stacking the Shelves (#53)

During the week of August 13th - 19th, I got...

From the Author:

After seeing my Top Ten Tuesday post about which books I would buy with a fully loaded gift card, Kim Savage offered to send me a copy of her book, which was featured in my post! I am so grateful and excited! Thank you so much, Kim! I absolutely can't wait to get this beauty read!

What lovely books did you guys stack your shelves with this week?

A Glimpse Back in Time (#4)

Friday, August 19, 2016

A Glimpse Back in Time is a feature where I talk about the interesting history behind the books that I read! If you want to see previous posts for this feature, look here!

Today I'm going to be talking about THE REAL PETER PAN by Piers Dudgeon! I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. I found myself rather bored while reading the book so I never finished it and therefore cannot write a review.

If you're into more biography type stuff or are SUPER into the Peter Pan story, definitely get yourself a copy of this book! I think it sounds super interesting, I just personally can't get into it.

Everyone has heard of Peter Pan. If you haven't, you might possibly be living under a rock. The story has been retold and adapted many, many times. Whether it's in movie form (Disney's animated adaptation, Finding Neverland, Hook) or book form (Unhooked, Stars, Everland, Tiger Lily, Never Never, Never Ever, etc.), the story never gets old!

Publisher: Thomas Dunne Books
Publication Date: July 12th, 2016
Source: Publisher
Format: Hardcover

Summary (from Goodreads):

The world has long been captivated by the story of Peter Pan and the countless movies, plays, musicals, and books that retell the story of Peter, Wendy, and the Lost Boys. Now, in this revealing behind-the-scenes book, author Piers Dudgeon examines the fascinating and complex relationships among Peter Pan's creator, J.M. Barrie, and the family of boys who inspired his work.

After meeting the Llewelyn Davies family in London's Kensington Garden, Barrie struck up an intense friendship with the children and their parents. The innocence of Michael, the fourth of five brothers, went on to influence the creation of Barrie's most famous character, Peter Pan. Barrie was so close to the Llewelyn Davies family that he became trustee and guardian to the boys following the deaths of their parents. Although the relationship between the boys and Barrie (and particularly between Barrie and Michael) was enduring, it was punctuated by the fiercest of tragedies. Throughout the heart-rending saga of Barrie's involvement with the Llewelyn Davies brothers, it is the figure of Michael, the most original and inspirational of their number, and yet also the one whose fate is most pitiable, that stands out.

The Real Peter Pan is a captivating true story of childhood, friendship, war, love, and regret.

So, for my post today, I'm going to talk a little bit about J.M. Barrie and the history behind the story of Peter Pan!

J.M. Barrie was born in Scotland in 1860, he was one of ten children, not all of whom survived childhood. In particular, he had an older brother named David who, at the age of 14, was killed in an ice skating accident. David is thought to be Barrie's first Lost Boy. This is potentially where Barrie's obsession with the innocence of young boys began.

In 1898, Barrie met the two oldest Llewelyn Davies brothers, George and Jack, in Kensington Gardens. Shortly after, he met the parents, Sylvia and Arthur. He befriended the family and was a big part of their lives. Later, after meeting, three more Davies children were born, Peter, Michael, and Nico. These children, particularly Michael, were the inspiration for Peter Pan. The preface to the 1928 published play said, "I suppose I always knew that I made Peter by rubbing the five of you violently together….That is all he is, the spark I got from you.”

The very first appearance of the character Peter Pan was in J.M. Barrie's adult novel, The Little White Bird. He was part of a story told to a young boy in the novel about a child who wandered Kensington Gardens at night. With the popularity of the novel and attachment to his character, Barrie wrote an entire play about Pan called Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. The play was also later adapted by Barrie into the longer novel, Peter Pan and Wendy.

Tragedy followed Barrie after befriending the Davies family. Arthur died of cancer with Sylvia following shortly after, also from cancer. Barrie took over guardianship of the children after the death of their parents. George died in battle during WWI and several years later, Michael drowned in the embrace of another man who was thought to be his lover. Peter became an alcoholic, probably because he was unable to escape his connection to Peter Pan and in 1960, he threw himself beneath a train.

Before his death in 1937, Barrie gave the rights to Peter Pan to a children's hospital, the Great Ormond Street Hospital, and to this day it still benefits a lot from owning the rights.

Despite allegations that he might have had more inappropriate feelings for the boys and some things he wrote that come off as kind of pedophile-y, Barrie was thought to be asexual and did the best that he could to take care of these boys that became his family.

What do you think about the inspiration for this story? Did you know this? This book, I think, touches more on the tragedies that befell the Davies family and such, so if you are more interested in that topic, definitely read this book!

I might try to more slowly read through this book in the future because it does sound so fascinating, but since I was given a copy of this book, I wanted to feature it on the blog sooner than I think I could finish the book.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the inspiration behind this story!
