Summary (from Goodreads):

For as long as Alice can remember, she has dreamed of Max. Together they have traveled the world and fallen deliriously, hopelessly in love. Max is the boy of her dreams—and only her dreams. Because he doesn’t exist.

But when Alice walks into class on her first day at a new school, there he is. It turns out, though, that Real Max is nothing like Dream Max, and getting to know each other in reality isn’t as perfect as Alice always hoped.

When their dreams start to bleed dangerously into their waking hours, the pair realize that they might have to put an end to a lifetime of dreaming about each other. But when you fall in love in your dreams, can reality ever be enough?

Alice Rowe and Max Wolfe have been dreaming about each other for as long as they can remember. They have epic adventures together in their shared dreamworld and somewhere along the way, they fell for each other. Each of them thought the other was just a product of their subconscious until Alice walks into her first class at her new school and sees REAL Max.

As effortless as it was to get to know each other in their dreams, real life is nothing like in their dreams.

I am not generally a fan of contemporary novels. But this book had just enough of a sci-fi twist to really interest me! Reading about their shared dreams was so much fun and so very different from their interactions in real life.

The characters in this book were all fantastic. They all have such wonderful personalities! Alice is so quirky and hilarious. She's definitely an all around dreamer, preferring living with her head in the clouds to real life. My only real problem with her was that she acted like she was entitled to Max just because she 'knew' him before most other people through her dreams. Other than that, I really liked Alice, I thought she was fun.

Max was a great character as well. He was a lot more grounded in reality than Alice was. He was really sweet to her for the most part, but understandably, he was hesitant to get to know her. He had a girlfriend and things going for him. Getting to know his dream girl would mess all that up. It takes some getting used to when you find out the girl of your dreams is actually real, I'm sure. I really liked Max and Alice together.

The rest of the characters were fantastic. Oliver, Alice's new friend in Boston, was hilarious, maybe a little bit over the top. Sophie, Alice's friend from New York, seems like she'd be a really great friend to have. Alice's dad is great. The doctor who Alice and Max see about their dreams is such an odd duck. He was such an interesting character, but perhaps a bit of a pain.

The only thing I really have a problem with is a bit of a SPOILER PROBABLY. So avoid this section if you're worried about that. Max had a girlfriend, but instead of breaking it off with her before doing anything with Alice, he just cheats. And then breaks up with her after she finds out. And later in the book it talks about how Celeste has moved on and has a new boyfriend so she's probably fine. It doesn't matter, it shouldn't be brushed off so lightly that Max cheated on her!!

Overall, I really loved this book. It's light and cute with a sci-fi twist. The romance is cute. The idea is super cute. If you're into contemporary, definitely read this! If you're not, you'll probably still like this! If you're not sure, just look at the cover. It's so pretty, how can you put it back down?

Have you read this book? What did you think of it?

  1. I remember when this book was about to publish, and I kept seeing it everywhere! It never *really* interested me, but I said to myself that if I got a copy that fell from the sky, I would definitely read it. I'm not really liking that romance aspect you mentioned, so it might be better if I avoided this one. And that is okay!

    Wonderful review, Cyra! =)

    1. It probably would be for the best if you avoided it if you're not into that kind of thing. I mean, this book was good and fun, but you're probably not missing TOO much if you don't ever read it! :)

  2. I enjoyed this one but I wasn't blown away by the writing. I'm actually more curious about her next book Literally which is a book about a book character falling in love . . . sort of like Stranger Than Fiction meets The Truman Show from what I've heard.
